Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based approach to systematically promote socially significant behaviours. ABA focuses on the observable relationship of behaviour to the environment, including antecedents and consequences, to determine why behaviour is happening. By functionally assessing the relationship between a targeted behaviour and the environment, the methods of ABA can be used to change that behaviour.
Methods of Applied Behavioural Analysis include but are not limited to:
- Visual Strategies
- Prompting
- Task Analyses
- Shaping
- Chaining
- Modeling
- Reinforcement
- Data Collection
Programs are:
- Individualized - Including student strengths and needs
- Proactive
- Maintained using positive reinforcement techniques
- Analyzed based on data collection
- Designed to incorporate generalization strategies so skills are demonstrated across multiple environments
