The Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) recognizes Asian Heritage Month and Jewish Heritage Month in May, which is an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the history and ongoing contributions of Canadians of Asian descent and Canadians of Jewish heritage and culture to supporting the growth and prosperity of Canada.
In support of the LKDSB’s Strategic Priority, “Inclusive Diversity: Champion anti-oppressive education,” the LKDSB is committed to promoting education, awareness and understanding of the communities it serves and supports actions to combat racist and oppressive practices, policies and procedures. We recognize that it is important for our language and curriculum to appropriately and respectfully reflect the local and global communities to which LKDSB students, staff and families are connected.
The definition of "Asian" is broad and doesn’t account for the uniqueness of individual countries, cultures and identities within this collective term. Information about Asian Heritage Month is available through the Government of Canada website. This website includes events in Asian Canadian history, noteworthy Canadians of Asian descent and a list of organizations and educational resources dedicated to promoting and commemorating Asian heritage in Canada.
Canadian Jewish Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate Jewish communities and the valuable contributions to Canadian history and society. We are committed to teaching about the resilient history of the Jewish community and the contributions to Canadian society, politics, economy and culture.
Together, we will continue to promote safe, welcoming and inclusive schools for all students and foster supportive learning environments for student success and well-being.
