National Indigenous Month is a time for celebrating all things in life. Indigenous people have referenced the limitless circles of responsibilities to co-exist with all creation. Each day organizations pay tribute to the land and territory through an acknowledgement. The truth is that we as a humanity cannot move forward in this life without the necessities of life, water, food, animals, insects, unity, kindness, and prosperity.

Indigenous people have been given the ultimate responsibilities of caring for the land.  The Anishinaabe way is to celebrate life seasonally, with the understanding that the gifts from the earth, water, and air are taking top priority.

This is also a time to reflect on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). This is time for communities across Turtle Island to reflect on reconciling with their own families and to reconcile with the many other non-Indigenous nations. The common goal is to walk this path together in Peace, Respect, and Friendship.

June is the month of Odehimin Giizis (Strawberry Moon, or Heart Berry Moon). There are many Anishinaabe teachings around the strawberry, which when cut in half, is the shape of a  heart.

We invite you to spend time learning about the unique cultures, traditions and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Metis people in the month of June and all year long. Take the time to honour the stories, achievements and resilience of Indigenous Peoples who have lived on this land since time immemorial and whose presence continues to impact the evolving nation.
