On Indigenous Veterans Day, we acknowledge the strength and sacrifice of Indigenous peoples who have served in Canada’s military. Indigenous veterans have a long history of protecting this land. The Indigenous Nations have always fought to protect the next seven generations of all people. The protection for sustainability also includes the land, air, and all water. Indigenous soldiers have faced the dual challenges of defending a nation that has historically oppressed them, while also holding deep ties to the land and their cultural identities. Their contributions remind us that resistance and resilience go hand in hand. At LKDSB, we honour their legacy by listening to their stories, educating ourselves, and standing in solidarity with Indigenous veterans and their communities. Today, we recognize their sacrifices and ensure they are never forgotten.
