🌟 Celebrating Black History Month at LKDSB 🌟
Every February, we reflect on the incredible achievements and contributions of Black Canadians. But at LKDSB, we believe in celebrating Black history year-round. Our educators bring Black history, voices, and perspectives into classrooms every day, fostering understanding and respect for the cultural contributions that have shaped our world.
This February, join us as we shine a spotlight on events, lessons, and activities across our Board to honour the lasting legacy of Black Canadians. It’s an opportunity for students, families, and communities to learn, celebrate, and be inspired by the remarkable individuals who’ve shaped our past—and continue to shape our future.
We invite you to explore the rich history of Black Canadians, including the powerful stories from our own local communities. Together, let’s build a more inclusive, compassionate, and prosperous Canada, today and every day!✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽

There are clubs and activities to suit everyone's interests at Hillcrest and with the cold weather we've had this week our Dungeons and Dragons fans were happy to have a fun indoor activity to turn to.

We would like to thank Branch 216 Legion - Petrolia for their generous support of our student nutrition program. This will be put to good use!

For this month's Colour House activity, Hillcrest will get into the spirit of Carnaval. We won't be playing in the snow like they would in Quebec, but we do have a fun activity planned for indoors. Don't forget to wear your colours!

Students in Grades 3-8 bundled up into the cold temperatures last week to explore the science of frozen bubbles. Mme Olah and her students concocted a homemade bubble solution that is thicker than typical bubble solution. Bubbles have 3 layers, an inner and outer soap layer, with a water layer in the middle. Due to the thicker bubble solution, the water layer has time to freeze before the soap layers. Each bubble created its own unique crystal patterns, and the students were in amazement of being able to witness this changing state of matter. The students were able to observe how different variables (temperature, wind, surface) impacted the results. If you are interested in creating your own bubble solution at home, here is the recipe!
Ingredients:
1 cup warm water
2.5 tablespoons corn syrup
2 tablespoons sugar
2.5 tablespoons dish soap
container for mixing
straws/bubble wands
Step 1: Pour 1 cup of nearly boiled water into a container.
Step 2: Stir in 2.5 tbsp corn syrup until mixed
Step 3: Stir in 2 tbsp sugar until well mixed.
Step 4: Slowly stir in 2.5 tbsp dish soap until just mixed. Do not overstir to create extra bubbles.
Step 5: Let the mixture chill outside for 30 minutes or in the fridge for a couple hours. A COLD mixture creates better results.
Step 6: Use straws or bubble wands and have fun!

Today, we had the honour of hosting the incredible Bressette family as guest dancers at our school! They shared their knowledge, passion, and culture through their traditional regalia and dances, including the Grass Dance and Jingle Dance. It was amazing to learn about the significance of each dance and the stories woven into the vibrant regalia. Students especially enjoyed being invited to join in the intertribal dances!
Thank you, Bressette family, for sharing a part of your culture with us.
Chi-miigwech.
