🌟 Celebrating Black History Month at LKDSB 🌟 Every February, we reflect on the incredible achievements and contributions of Black Canadians. But at LKDSB, we believe in celebrating Black history year-round. Our educators bring Black history, voices, and perspectives into classrooms every day, fostering understanding and respect for the cultural contributions that have shaped our world. This February, join us as we shine a spotlight on events, lessons, and activities across our Board to honour the lasting legacy of Black Canadians. It’s an opportunity for students, families, and communities to learn, celebrate, and be inspired by the remarkable individuals who’ve shaped our past—and continue to shape our future. We invite you to explore the rich history of Black Canadians, including the powerful stories from our own local communities. Together, let’s build a more inclusive, compassionate, and prosperous Canada, today and every day!✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽

Thai Pongal, which means "to boil or overflow," is a 4-day Tamil festival celebrating the fall harvest, the sun, and the spirit of renewal. 🌞 It's a time to give thanks for the bounty of the earth, let go of the old, and make room for new beginnings as we welcome spring. 🌱 Traditions include gathering around fires, offering old belongings to burn, and giving gifts like sugarcane, bananas, and coconuts to honour the sun gods and those who watch over the weather, land, and animals. 🔥🍌🌿 Here’s to letting go, to new beginnings, and to the radiant sun that sustains us all. ☀️ 🌾✨ Iniya Thai Pongal Valthukkal to those celebrating! 🎉

On Indigenous Veterans Day, we acknowledge the strength and sacrifice of Indigenous peoples who have served in Canada’s military. Indigenous veterans have a long history of protecting this land. The Indigenous Nations have always fought to protect the next seven generations of all people. The protection for sustainability also includes the land, air, and all water. Indigenous soldiers have faced the dual challenges of defending a nation that has historically oppressed them, while also holding deep ties to the land and their cultural identities. Their contributions remind us that resistance and resilience go hand in hand. At LKDSB, we honour their legacy by listening to their stories, educating ourselves, and standing in solidarity with Indigenous veterans and their communities. Today, we recognize their sacrifices and ensure they are never forgotten.
