Our Health and Wellness SHSM students spent the day at Lorne Henderson Conservation Area with the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority, exploring how nature and innovation go hand-in-hand.

The group started with a healing walk, using their senses to tune into the surroundings. Students tracked their heart rate, breathing, and stress levels before and after—and the numbers proved it. Heart rates and stress levels dropped across the board just by being outside.

In the afternoon, the focus shifted to entrepreneurship. Students brainstormed and pitched ideas on an important mission: how to get more youth into conservation areas to improve their mental health.

It was a great day of seeing how getting outdoors can spark better mental health and new ideas!

Once again our Working with School Age Children and Adolescents class planned activities for one of our grade 8 classes. There was a big group game of line tag to start followed by several very competitive games of dodgeball. Our exchange students from Brazil had a great time too!

📚⏱️ Two Minutes, Two Books!
Today in the library, students took part in a fast-paced book tasting! They rotated through stations, spending two minutes with each selection—books and audiobooks—reading the back covers, skimming pages, or sampling clips, and deciding if it was a “must-read” or a pass.
It was a great way to explore new genres, discover hidden gems, and build their “to-read” lists! 📖✨

🌿 Guest Speaker Spotlight 🌿
Today our Horticulture class had the pleasure of welcoming *Monique from Ginkgo Sustainability*! 🌱
Monique shared her expertise on *green roof assembly, maintenance, system design, and plant selection*, giving students a hands-on look at how sustainable roofing solutions help manage stormwater and support urban biodiversity.
Students even built their own small-scale green roof models to test stormwater absorption 💧🌿 — seeing sustainability in action! To top it off, they had the chance to try on professional work equipment and get a real feel for careers in the green industry.
A huge thank you to Monique and the team at Ginkgo Sustainability for inspiring the next generation of horticulture professionals! 🌎

Our Health and Wellness SHSM students headed to Chatham recently for an incredible "Healthcare Horizons" experience! 🏥
It was a day packed with inspiration and discovery as our students joined peers from across Chatham-Kent to dive deep into the medical field. The journey started at St. Clair College, where students heard firsthand from faculty and current college students about what it’s really like to train for a career in healthcare. 🩺
Next, we went behind the scenes at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance to explore the variety of roles that keep a hospital running—from frontline clinical care to the essential specialized services.
We are so proud of our SHSM students for exploring these paths and preparing to become the next generation of healthcare workers! 💝
