Attention parents, guardians and HRPS community: Our special food days, specifically Hot Dog day, is in desperate need of volunteers to learn how to plan for and carry out these days into the 2025-2026 school year. We have two Hot Dog days left this school year, Monday March 3rd and Monday, April 7th. If you or someone you know, would be interested and willing to learn the ropes and take over that responsibility in the fall, we will be able to continue to offer this option to students and their families and the school will continue to benefit from the funds raised from these days. Without volunteers, the program cannot continue. Contact the school office with any questions!

Beginning at sunset today, the period of Ramadan will begin for Muslim people worldwide. Ramadan is a month long period, ending on Saturday, March 29th, where people participate in fasting, prayer, reflection and community. The end of this period is celebrated as Eid al-Fitr. During that time, children may wear new clothing, special pastries may be baked, gifts can be exchanged, graves of relatives may be visited, and people gather for family meals and to pray in mosques.

Tomorrow is Rare Disease Day. This day is held annually on the last day in February, sometimes on February 29th in a Leap Year, because that is the most rare day on the calendar. This day helps to raise awareness and generate change for the 300 million people worldwide living with a rare disease, their families and caregivers. We hope that you will join in this event by wearing blue tomorrow. Blue is chosen as the colour because of blue jeans and the relation to many rare diseases being a gene-based condition.

Students in various classes at HRPS took place in the Student Vote campaign. This program is an authentic learning program that provides students with the opportunity to experience the voting process firsthand and practice the habits of active and informed citizenship. Thanks to Mme. Ryall for ordering materials and organizing this experience for our students.

Today, our school was filled with pink amongst students and staff. There was a focus on what students could do to show kindness to others in the school, in their families and within the community. We work hard everyday to educated students about bullying and who to seek help from if they see bullying or they are the victim of bullying. Be kind, always!

On Monday, our Grade 5/6 class wanted to spend some quality time outdoors on the expansive HRPS yard before the warmer weather and rain made a mess of the snow. Our custodian Mr. Payne located some old snow shoes tucked away in a storage area. As there were only 15 pairs of snowshoes, the students paired up and they shared going out to the forest and back again wearing the equipment. An outdoor adventure learning a new skills, teamwork and improving cardio health all tied in together!

Madame Janisse's SK/Grade 1 class made a collaborative art project inspired by the book “Plus que de la pêche” by Bellen Woodard.  The story is about a girl who questions the use of the word “skin colour” to mean the peach crayon as it doesn’t reflect everyone’s skin colour. She is the creator of skin coloured crayons and has transformed the industry. The class traced their hands and were allowed to choose from the 24 “Colours of the World” markers to colour their hands. The student art work was used to make a bulletin board display for all to see. Bravo, mes amis!

Pink Shirt Day is an annual event against bullying held in Canada and New Zealand. Participants wear pink shirts and attend or host informative events to raise awareness about bullying, particularly in schools. Pink Shirt Day was started in 2007 in Canada, where it is held on the last Wednesday of February each year. We hope to see as many people as possible wearing Pink shirts on Wednesday!

A fun contest put together by the Chatham-Kent Public Library as well as the Rotary club is challenging students to read over the course of 5 weeks. Since beginning the contest February 3rd, Mrs. Gillett's Grade 6-7 class is currently holding first place for the Intermediate Division. Lets's hope that over the next two weeks, they can maintain their lead and become the winners of Clash of the Classroom!

We want to extend a big congratulations to the Senior Girls Basketball team. On Tuesday after school, they were able to bring home the championship pennant on Ridgetown turf after defeating their girls team! This means that our boys team AND girls team won the Basketball Championships! This makes the whole school proud of the athletes and coaches! Mrs. Gillett was also a coach, but somehow missed the photo with the team and Mr. Jaques.

In French Immersion Kindergarten today, our learning for Black History Month focused on love and acceptance for all. Today, we read a story called "Plus que la couleur pêche", which is a story about raising students' awareness that skin comes in many beautiful colours. Based on the true story of crayon activist and entrepreneur Bellen Woodard, the children learned that young people can have a BIG impact on the world. Bellen's goal with this story is to "help kids be more understanding of each other". Today, we drew portraits of ourselves, our families and friends using so many more colours than just peach. We are all unique and beautiful!
