Treaties Recognition Week: Learning About Our Shared Treaty Relationships

From November 1–7, 2026, the Lambton Kent District School Board recognizes Treaties Recognition Week, an opportunity for students, staff, families and communities across Ontario to learn more about Treaties, Treaty rights and Treaty relationships.

Treaties are legally binding agreements that establish rights, responsibilities and relationships between First Nations and governments. While many Treaties were entered into generations ago, Treaty commitments and relationships continue to have relevance today.

Ontario first established Treaties Recognition Week in 2016. The week provides an important opportunity to increase Treaty awareness and understanding among students and the broader public.

For schools, Treaties Recognition Week is an opportunity for learning and reflection. Understanding Treaties means learning not only about events of the past, but also about the relationships, rights and responsibilities that continue in the present.

Throughout the week, LKDSB students and staff are encouraged to deepen their understanding by listening to Indigenous voices and perspectives, learning about Treaty relationships and considering what those relationships mean in the communities where we live, learn and work.

Learning about Treaties is one part of the continued work of truth and reconciliation. By strengthening our knowledge and understanding, we can contribute to more respectful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Treaties Recognition Week reminds us that this learning is not limited to one week. Understanding our shared history, the Treaties and the responsibilities that flow from them is ongoing work that helps build stronger relationships today and for generations to come.
