Ramadan + Lent

This week marks the beginning of two meaningful journeys for many in our school communities: Ramadan for our Muslim students, staff, and families, and the continued observance of Lent for many of our Christian community members.

Even though these traditions come from different faiths, both are deeply rooted in reflection, compassion, self‑discipline, and a desire to grow—individually and collectively. And across our board, these sacred seasons show up in so many unique, personal ways.

For some students and staff, Ramadan means early mornings, family prayers, and fasting during the school or workday. It can also mean quieter breaks, changes in energy levels, and a strong sense of community and purpose as sunset approaches each evening.

For others, Lent is a time of giving something up, taking something on, practicing gratitude, or reconnecting with spiritual routines. It might look like acts of service, moments of quiet reflection, or being more intentional about kindness and connection.

And for many, both seasons bring opportunities to support one another—celebrating differences, learning from each other, and recognizing that our schools are home to many traditions that deserve respect and understanding.

What makes our board truly special is that all of this can exist side by side. Our classrooms, hallways, and staff rooms hold many different stories, backgrounds, and beliefs. We don’t all observe the same things in the same ways—but we can all honour what matters to one another.

As the next weeks unfold, let’s continue to create spaces where students and staff feel seen, supported, and welcomed in their full identities. Whether someone is fasting, praying, reflecting, giving, resting, or simply learning about the practices of others—there is room for all of it at LKDSB.
