The Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) is proud to join the global movement during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which began on November 25—the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women—and continues until December 10, International Human Rights Day.
This year’s theme, “UNiTE to End Digital Violence against Women and Girls,” shines a spotlight on an urgent issue: the growing use of digital tools to stalk, harass, and abuse women and girls. These acts don’t just happen online—they often lead to real-life harm, including coercion, physical abuse, and even femicide.
What is Digital Abuse?
Digital abuse includes:
Non-consensual sharing of intimate images
Cyberbullying, trolling, and online threats
Online harassment and sexual harassment
AI-generated deepfakes and manipulated content
Hate speech and disinformation
Doxxing (publishing private information)
Online stalking and surveillance
Grooming and sexual exploitation
Catfishing and impersonation
Misogynistic networks (e.g., incel forums)
Women with public visibility—such as activists, journalists, and politicians—are particularly targeted, and the impact is even greater for those facing intersecting forms of discrimination.
Why This Matters
Digital violence is a human rights issue. It silences voices, perpetuates inequality, and causes long-lasting harm. The UNiTE campaign calls on everyone to act:
Governments: Enforce laws that penalize digital violence
Technology companies: Ensure platform safety and remove harmful content
Donors: Fund feminist organizations working to end this violence
Individuals: Raise your voice, support survivors, and promote safe online spaces
At LKDSB, we believe education is key to creating a safer, more inclusive world. During these 16 days, we encourage students, staff, and families to learn, reflect, and take action to end violence against women and girls—both online and offline.
