School Day Game

The Sarnia Sting’s 3rd Annual School Day Game welcomed a record crowd of enthusiastic young fans — including more than 2,000 students from the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB).

Held at Progressive Auto Sales Arena, the event offered students a chance to experience the thrill of live hockey in a fun, inclusive, and educational setting. For many, it was their first-ever live game, made even more special by the opportunity to attend with classmates and school staff.

In a standout moment, students sang O’Canada to open the game, filling the arena with voices that reflected both school pride and community spirit.

Some of the players on the ice were already familiar faces to LKDSB students — the Sarnia Sting team regularly visits schools to serve breakfast, read with students, and lead physical activity sessions throughout the school year.

The day was made possible thanks to the generosity of community partners:

  • Lambton Dairy Farmers donated chocolate milk for every student in attendance.

  • Kyle’s No Frills provided snacks, including granola bars and fresh fruit.

  • Sarnia Sting Season Ticket Holders donated their tickets, allowing LKDSB to offer complimentary admission to students facing financial barriers.

“It’s good for kids to be able to participate in events like this and we are fortunate to have such great community support and partnerships that make it possible,” said LKDSB Director of Education, Gary Girardi. “Together, we’re building moments that really matter for our students.”

Val Gotelaer, Manager of Group Sales & Experience for the Sarnia Sting Hockey Club — and proud LKDSB alum — shared:

“Our organization prides itself on being a leader in the community and a positive role model for our youth. The School Day Game is one of the most meaningful events we host each season. So many students, many of which are attending their first ever live hockey game, come together for a fun and memorable experience with their school communities. We're thankful for the support of our local schools and for their collaboration and support on this community and youth-focused initiative.”

The School Day Game continues to grow in popularity, offering students a chance to connect with peers, engage with local sports culture, and enjoy a memorable outing that blends fun with community values.

LKDSB extends its heartfelt thanks to all sponsors, volunteers, and families who helped make this event a success.
