LKDSB’s Indigenous Teacher Education Program Celebrates First Graduating Cohort

November 21, 2023

Nine individuals crossed the stage at Queen’s University on Wednesday, November 15th to receive their Bachelor of Education Degree with a specialization in Indigenous Education. The recipients were then honoured last night at a local graduation ceremony taking place at Aamijiwnaang First Nation.

The Indigenous Teacher Education Program (ITEP), which provides candidates an opportunity to specialize in Indigenous Education and qualifies graduates for Ontario College of Teachers Certification, is only offered at five site locations.

“We are truly appreciative of the partnership we have with Queen’s University to offer this unique program to local Indigenous Education teacher candidates,” explains Emily Dixon, LKDSB Superintendent of Education. “We are very proud to be one of the province’s five community sites that offers the program, and we recognize the opportunity to foster pride in Indigenous Education for our local students.”

The program is offered to both Indigenous students and Non-Indigenous students with a university degree. Candidates in the ITEP program take specific courses in Indigenous Teacher Education, in addition to the regular program that all primary-junior division teacher candidates are required to take. Throughout the academic year, the program hosts, and partners with Indigenous organizations to bring learning opportunities that support and teach about Indigenous Education.
