COVID-19 Update - June 22, 2020

June 22, 2020

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

From March Break until the end of June, this has been an incredible school year unlike any other. Since the Ontario Minister of Education announced that schools will remain closed to students in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) staff has implemented an incredible amount of Learn at Home programming and supports. We are proud of our school communities for their ability to adjust and adapt to the needs of students in order to support a continuity of learning for those who were able to participate.

We know that this time has been challenging for families and as partners in education, we particularly want to extend a thank you to parents/guardians for your patience, understanding and ongoing efforts to support your child's academic success and well-being during these unusual circumstances. We hope that you have time this summer to relax, recharge and enjoy the warm weather. Please note: Report cards will be mailed via Canada Post to families following the end of the school year. For those who have borrowed LKDSB IT devices, you are welcome to keep the devices until further notice to support learning.

Looking ahead to the 2020-2021 school year, we are planning for many possibilities. On June 19, the Ontario government released its safety plan for the resumption of class for the 2020-2021 school year, outlining scenarios for how students, teachers and staff can safely return to classrooms in September.

The province's announcement may be found at this link.

Read a letter to parents/guardians from the Minister of Education.

In anticipation of various possible scenarios, we are planning for a return to regular, in-class learning with enhanced health and safety protocols; a modified school day routine with a maximum limit of 15 students in a typical classroom at one time and timetabling that would limit student contact with teachers and classmates as much as possible; and a continuation of remote, teacher-led at-home learning.

We also realize that depending on the provincial and local Public Health recommendations, we may need to transition between these scenarios during the 2020-2021 school year as circumstances necessitate. Based on the past few months, we are confident in the ability of our system to adjust and adapt as necessary. The Ministry of Education continues to seek guidance from Public Health officials and will provide further clarification to school boards and parents/guardians closer to the start of the 2020-2021 school year.

We know there continues to be uncertainty about what September will bring and we promise to keep you informed as soon as new information becomes available. We will continue to post updates on the COVID-19 website and communicate as per typical means of communication for your school.

In order to assist with our planning for the 2020-2021 school year, we are interested in gathering your thoughts about any important considerations we should include in the transition planning. You are invited to participate in a Thoughtexchange to share your input and complete the following thought:

β€œAs plans are developed for the possibility of reopening schools in September, LKDSB please remember to…"

We appreciate your participation in the Thoughtexchange, as this will help inform planning and decision-making to ready our system for the new school year. Staff will continue to work throughout the summer to support the transition in September and we will keep families informed as new information becomes available. Click here to share your thoughts.

Please continue to visit the LKDSB website throughout the summer for updates (www.lkdsb.net). Should you have any further questions, please contact your school as voice messaging will be checked throughout the summer.

Sincerely,
John Howitt
Director of Education
