Bringing Amira Home: What Families Need to Know
Supporting your child’s reading—at school and at home
Amira is a supportive reading tool your child may use at home to strengthen reading skills and confidence. By listening as students read aloud and providing gentle, personalized feedback, Amira helps support reading development while complementing the high‑quality literacy instruction students receive at school. Amira is intended as additional support, not a replacement for classroom teaching.
What is Amira?
Amira is an online, secured reading tutor that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to support students as they learn to read. As your child reads aloud, Amira listens and responds with guidance that is tailored to your child’s individual strengths and needs. The support Amira provides is research‑based and aligned with best practices in early literacy instruction.
Who can use Amira at home?
Students access Amira primarily during the school day. In addition, all Senior Kindergarten to Grade 4 students are able to use Amira at home as part of their reading support program. Home access is supported by the school, and families will be notified by their child’s teacher.
Why are we using it?
The Lambton Kent District School Board uses Amira to provide personalized reading support that adapts to each student’s learning needs. Amira works alongside classroom teaching to:
support reading development,
provide individualized feedback during reading practice, and
help students build confidence when reading aloud.
Amira Learning continues to work with researchers to ensure the tool is evidence‑based and aligned with best practices in early literacy instruction.
How much should my child use Amira at home?
For students using Amira at home, the recommended amount of use is 30–45 minutes per week. More time is not better—this limited amount of practice has been shown to have the most positive impact.
Families may find it helpful to break this into shorter sessions, such as:
three 10‑minute sessions per week, or
two 15‑minute sessions per week.
How do families get started at home?
To access Amira at home:
Choose your child’s school from the drop‑down menu.
Enter your child’s username.
Enter the 4‑digit password provided by the school.
Your child can begin reading aloud to Amira.
On iPads, Amira can also be added to the home screen for easier access.
What devices and browsers work best?
Amira works best on devices that have a microphone and speakers, such as:
iPads
iMac
Chromebooks
laptops or desktop computers
Devices | Specs | Operating System | Browser |
|---|---|---|---|
Desktop or Laptop with Windows | Minimum 4GB of RAM | Current OS version and up to 2 prior versions | Chrome or Microsoft Edge |
Chromebook | Minimum 4GB of RAM | Current OS version and up to 2 prior versions | Chrome Only |
iMac | Minimum 4GB of RAM | Current OS version and up to 2 prior versions | Chrome or Safari |
iPad | 3 LDDPR4 RAM | Current OS version and up to 2 prior versions | Safari Only |
Using the recommended browsers and devices is important. If unsupported devices or browsers are used, families may see error messages such as “platform error” or “ask your teacher for loading content.”
Privacy, Safety, and AI
Your child’s safety and privacy are a priority.
Amira’s AI only uses carefully designed and pre‑approved responses.
It cannot browse the internet, generate open‑ended content, or go “off‑script.”
Everything your child hears—from questions to feedback—has been reviewed and approved by educators and literacy experts.
Student data is securely stored in Canada and is protected by the Lambton Kent District School Board.
