Volunteering at LKDSB
Parents/caregivers and community members are encouraged to participate in volunteer activities that support LKDSB programs and services and help students succeed.
Here are just a few ways you could help in a school or classroom:
· Read with students who need extra help
· Supervise field trips
· Support school council events and activities
· Coach sports activities
Parents/caregivers and community members who wish to volunteer should first contact the school principal to confirm volunteer opportunities. Once the Principal confirms the volunteer opportunity you will be required to obtain the appropriate police record check (PRC).
Police Record Checks
A Level 2 – Criminal record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC) will be required for volunteers participating in day field trips and events, and classroom activities where the volunteer is with the classroom teacher or a staff member. CRJMCs are free of charge for volunteers
A Level 3 – Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) will be required for all volunteers participating in overnight excursions, coaching and those working directly with students and in a position of trust or authority. A letter from the school outlining the specific expectations of this volunteer role will be required in order to request a VSC.
You will have to apply for a Police Record Check in the jurisdiction in which you live. Once you receive your police reference check clearance, please submit it to your school principal, to be cleared as a volunteer. If you have children in several schools, you will only require one PRC. Talk to your school principal(s) about coordinating volunteer clearance at more than one LKDSB site.
Before volunteering, you must have a CLEAR Police Record Check.
Volunteers in schools cannot perform activities that are the responsibility of school staff.
