Pathways Destination Planning
Planning for life after high school is a process that begins early and develops over time. Students are encouraged to explore their interests, strengths, and opportunities throughout their education, with many chances to reflect, adjust, and refine their plans along the way.
In Grades 7 to 10, the focus is on research and exploration. During these years, students learn about a wide range of careers and pathways and make course selections that help keep future options open while beginning to align learning with areas of interest.
By Grade 11, students can begin more intentional and targeted career exploration. This may include learning more about pathway‑aligned opportunities such as Specialist High Skills Major programs, Dual Credit, Cooperative Education, and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program. By February of the Grade 11 year, it is helpful for students to have a general understanding of the pathways, career sectors, and programs they may be interested in, as this supports informed course selection for Grade 12 and beyond.
By Grade 12, students are typically enrolled in courses and programs that best support their chosen pathway and prepare them for their next steps after graduation. Whether students are planning to pursue apprenticeship, college, university, or transition directly into the workforce, supports and resources are available below to help guide their pathway planning.
