Three TIERS of Elementary Enrichment

TIER 1: CLASSROOM ENRICHMENT

Classroom enrichment can take many forms, allowing students to engage with the material in ways that reflect their individual needs and strengths. This might involve varying the pace at which content is covered, or exploring topics in greater depth compared to their peers. Enrichment opportunities may include open-ended questioning, curriculum extensions, independent research, and problem-solving challenges.

Classroom teachers will design programs that enable students to reach their full potential. This doesn’t necessarily mean advancing beyond their grade level, but rather allowing them to explore subjects with more breadth and depth. Key elements of a successful enrichment program include flexibility, choice, and collaboration. The Enrichment Team is available to support teachers in implementing these enriching experiences for their students.

TIER 2: ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Enrichment Opportunities provide students with the chance to collaborate with intellectual peers across various fields, extending beyond what can typically be offered in the regular classroom setting. These opportunities are coordinated by the Enrichment Resource Teacher.

In addition to Classroom Enrichment, students in the Opportunities program can choose from a variety of interest-based activities available through the Enrichment Google Classroom. The learning experiences offered are tailored to students' individual needs, talents, and interests. Students may also have the chance to attend enrichment events outside of the school. The opportunities will evolve each year, ensuring students are exposed to a diverse range of experiences throughout their elementary years.

[This type of enrichment is for students who scored in the 95th to the 97th percentile]

TIER 3: CORE ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

The CORE Program is designed for students identified as Gifted through the ‘Identification, Placement, and Review Committee (IPRC) process. This skills-based program focuses on addressing the needs of each student to support their development.

The CORE Program emphasizes the development of critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, metacognition, leadership, and collaboration skills. Students in the CORE Program will have opportunities to work with myself and their peers within their school and outside of their school.

[This type of enrichment is for students who scored in the 98th-99th percentile]

Secondary Enrichment

SECONDARY ENRICHMENT

Unlike elementary enrichment, secondary enrichment does not operate within a tiered system. Instead, all students are invited to participate in enrichment activities based on their interests, strengths, and academic goals. The program is designed to encourage deeper learning, independent inquiry, and skill development in a variety of fields.

Students who demonstrate signs of giftedness and were not assessed using the Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test (CCAT 7) in Grade 4 or 7 may request testing.

Families who believe their child would benefit from gifted identification can speak with their school’s Resource Teacher to explore the possibility of an assessment. The results of this testing may support further programming considerations, including identification through the Identification, Placement, and Review Committee (IPRC) process.

CLASSROOM ENRICHMENT

Classroom enrichment at the secondary level is embedded within subject areas, allowing students to explore topics with greater depth and complexity. Teachers provide opportunities for students to engage in advanced problem-solving, open-ended inquiry, curriculum extensions, and independent research. Enrichment strategies may include self-directed projects, interdisciplinary learning, and real-world applications of knowledge. Classroom teachers who would like support in integrating enrichment strategies into their instruction are encouraged to reach out to the Secondary Resource Teacher for Enrichment, who can provide guidance, resources, and collaboration to enhance student learning experiences.

ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Beyond the classroom, students have access to a variety of enrichment opportunities, including guest speaker sessions, field trips, competitions, workshops, and special projects. These experiences allow students to collaborate with like-minded peers, explore their interests in greater depth, and develop critical skills such as leadership, innovation, and adaptability.

Additionally, secondary students can participate in the Extending Activities Program, where they complete four 30-hour enrichment experiences to earn a credit. These activities are designed for self-motivated learners and include mentor interactions to provide real-world connections to their areas of interest.
