Understanding Artificial Intelligence (AI) in LKDSB

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming part of everyday life, and students interact with it regularly—whether through online research, learning tools, or personal devices. At the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB), we want to ensure students use AI safely, responsibly, and in ways that support learning.

What is Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to advanced computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as understanding language, recognizing patterns, solving problems, and learning from experience.

Generative AI (GenAI) is a type of AI that can create new content—such as text, images, or code—based on short prompts or interactive conversations.

Why LKDSB Uses AI in Education

AI is transforming how people learn, work, and communicate. By integrating AI into classrooms in a safe and structured way, we help students:

  • Access secure, reliable tools designed for learning

  • Receive personalized and adaptive support

  • Get instant feedback to strengthen understanding

  • Build creativity, problem‑solving, and digital literacy skills

  • Prepare for future careers where AI will play a major role

AI also helps educators by streamlining routine tasks, allowing more time for one‑on‑one support and meaningful instruction.

Importantly, students and staff learn to critically evaluate AI, identify bias, and understand when human judgment must take priority.

To support families, we provide:

  • Policies and procedures

  • Learning pathways

Why LKDSB Uses a Board‑Approved AI Tool

Protecting student and staff privacy is our highest priority. Many publicly available AI tools do not meet the security standards required for use in schools and may put sensitive information at risk, including personal data, academic records, and professional information.

After careful review, LKDSB has selected Google Gemini (for staff and students aged 13+) because it:

  • Meets strict privacy and security requirements

  • Encrypts and anonymizes data

  • Stores information securely

  • Prevents unauthorized access

Using a Board‑approved tool ensures innovation happens safely and responsibly, supporting both learning and community trust.
