For this month's Colour House activity, Hillcrest will get into the spirit of Carnaval. We won't be playing in the snow like they would in Quebec, but we do have a fun activity planned for indoors. Don't forget to wear your colours!

Students in Grades 3-8 bundled up into the cold temperatures last week to explore the science of frozen bubbles. Mme Olah and her students concocted a homemade bubble solution that is thicker than typical bubble solution. Bubbles have 3 layers, an inner and outer soap layer, with a water layer in the middle. Due to the thicker bubble solution, the water layer has time to freeze before the soap layers. Each bubble created its own unique crystal patterns, and the students were in amazement of being able to witness this changing state of matter. The students were able to observe how different variables (temperature, wind, surface) impacted the results. If you are interested in creating your own bubble solution at home, here is the recipe!
Ingredients:
1 cup warm water
2.5 tablespoons corn syrup
2 tablespoons sugar
2.5 tablespoons dish soap
container for mixing
straws/bubble wands
Step 1: Pour 1 cup of nearly boiled water into a container.
Step 2: Stir in 2.5 tbsp corn syrup until mixed
Step 3: Stir in 2 tbsp sugar until well mixed.
Step 4: Slowly stir in 2.5 tbsp dish soap until just mixed. Do not overstir to create extra bubbles.
Step 5: Let the mixture chill outside for 30 minutes or in the fridge for a couple hours. A COLD mixture creates better results.
Step 6: Use straws or bubble wands and have fun!

Today, we had the honour of hosting the incredible Bressette family as guest dancers at our school! They shared their knowledge, passion, and culture through their traditional regalia and dances, including the Grass Dance and Jingle Dance. It was amazing to learn about the significance of each dance and the stories woven into the vibrant regalia. Students especially enjoyed being invited to join in the intertribal dances!
Thank you, Bressette family, for sharing a part of your culture with us.

Sting visit. (2 of 2)

We had an incredible and inspiring visit with Sting players Hall, Moses, and Bodin! The energy in the room was electric as students eagerly submitted their questions, gaining valuable insights from these talented athletes. To top it all off, everyone left with autographs and unforgettable memories. What an amazing experience! Thank you Mme Davis for organizing. (1 of 2)

Please note, that we will not do Fashion Faux Pas Day on Friday, but instead, we will do a Sting Spirit Day on Thursday for their visit.

That's a wrap on 2024! We had a great week as a school community, ending it with two assemblies. One where students learned about holidays from a variety of cultures and one where students performed to a packed house!
Of course, “packed” is the key word! Let’s just say it was cozy enough to make us all feel like one big, happy family.
The staff at Hillcrest wish all of our students and families happy and safe holidays. See you in the new year!
Cheerfulness is contagious – spread it everywhere you go.
Students in Mme Nesbitt, Mme Bailey and M. Kennefick's classes spread cheer around town today handing out greeting cards and singing songs. We hope their cheer was contagious to everyone they met.

The Hillcrest family is grateful to our community partners @LCCVI and @VPP for inviting us to the high energy band presentation and a movie on the big screen this week. They say it takes a village to raise a child and our village is the best! Merci!

Students and staff gathered together to enjoy a delicious turkey dinner on Monday. We are so grateful to the volunteers who made this event possible and to the many families who purchased a meal for a student who needed one. We have such a generous and caring school community!

"Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man". Students in Mme Van Troost's and Mme Verroen's classes decorated gingerbread cookies after finishing their writing piece on how to capture a gingerbread.

Students in grade 7 and 8 used Kidder Create kits to learn and apply the features of strong and stable structures.

Tous sont bienvenus!

What a fun time at the Jingle Mingle! We cannot thank our grade 7 and 8 students enough for putting this on for our entire student body. You thought of everything to make it a successful event. Bravo!
