​​Experiential Learning is an approach to student learning that provides students with opportunities to participate actively in experiences connected to a community outslide of school (local, national or global); reflect on those experiences to derive meaning from them; and apply their learning to their decisions and actions in various aspects of their lives.

At the Lambton Kent District School Board, students can also participate in many provincial programs that expose students to opportunities beyond the classroom.  These experiences take the form of Cooperative Education, SHSM and OYAP programs, Dual Credit Experiences and International Education.

Cooperative Education Programs

Cooperative Education integrates academic study and theory with on-the-job experience. Students are placed in training stations in the community where they are provided with challenging responsibilities and learn by doing.  Visit Cooperative Education for more detailed information.

Specialist High Skills Major

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a Ministry approved program you can participate in during grade eleven and twelve.

​It is valuable because it shows that you have focused your education toward a particular employment sector.​

Earning the SHSM

1. Complete a bundle of eight to ten grade 11/12 courses focused on a particular employment sector, including two co-op credits.

2. Earn industry recognized certifications and awareness training related to the employment sector.

3. Use the Ontario Skills Passport to track the skills you are gaining.

4. Take advantage of Reach Ahead opportunities to connect with the student's post-secondary plans.

5. Participate in sector related Experiential Learning and Career Exploration activities.​

At WDSS, we offer 4 SHSM Certifications: Health & Wellness, Manufacturing, Arts and Culture, and Environment​. 

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program

The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) is a School to Work program that opens the door for students to explore and work in apprenticeship occupations starting in Grade 11 or Grade 12 through the Cooperative Education program. Students have an opportunity to become registered apprentices and work towards becoming certified journeypersons in a skilled trade while completing their secondary school diplomas.

Dual Credit

The  Dual Credit program allows students to participate in a college course alongside their secondary education.  Students identified by their high school student success team as eligible for the program are enrolled in full or half-day co-op to provide  the necessary flexibility in their timetables to allow for participation in this program (allows students to negotiate their mandatory co-op work hours with employers).  Students who are not enrolled in co-op should speak to their guidance counsellor to see if their current timetable allows for enough flexibility to participate in this program.
