Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC)

The Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) is preparing for upcoming capital work related to Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC)—a lightweight concrete material used in roof and wall construction between the 1950s and 1980s.

Following guidance from the Ontario Ministry of Education, LKDSB will remove and replace RAAC at three identified schools during the 2025–26 school year. The Ministry has provided dedicated funding to support this work.

The affected schools are:

  • Alexander MacKenzie Secondary School – RAAC is located above the technical shops and gymnasium.

  • Errol Village Public School – RAAC is located above classrooms 10 & 11, the mechanical room, and washrooms.

  • H.W. Burgess Public School – RAAC is located above the gymnasium, stage, and kitchen.

All RAAC areas have been professionally assessed, and it is safe to occupy these spaces while planning is underway.

LKDSB is currently working with architects and construction teams to develop detailed plans. Once timelines are finalized, they will be shared with school communities. Due to the scope of the work, construction may extend beyond the typical summer window. Temporary adjustments may be required, including relocating students or staff to other areas of the building, portables, or alternate LKDSB facilities.

We are committed to keeping families and staff informed throughout this process and will continue to provide updates as planning progresses.
