The Technological Education Hub at AMSS will provide students in Grade 9-12 the opportunity to experience immersive, hands-on learning opportunities across a variety of high demand sectors including:
Construction
Culinary Arts
Hairstyling & Aesthetics
Horticulture & Landscaping
Manufacturing / Welding
Transportation
Grade 9 Students
Grade 9 students interested in the skilled trades will take destreamed English, Mathematics, Science, and Geography, along with Physical Education, Visual Arts, and two tech courses. Using a rotational model, students will explore Construction, Culinary Arts, Hairstyling & Aesthetics, Horticulture & Landscaping, Manufacturing, and Transportation. These rotations help students discover their interests, develop foundational skills, and make informed choices about specialized tech courses in future grades.
Grade 10 Students
Grade 10 students with an interest in the skilled trades have the opportunity to explore two technology courses from the list above and an elective of their choice from the AMSS course calendar. In addition to providing students with exposure to the skilled trades, AMSS will provide all compulsory Grade 10 courses including English, Mathematics, Science, History and Civics/Careers.
Grade 11 and 12 Students
Grade 11 and 12 students have the opportunity to participate in the Specialist High Skills Major Program (SHSM) allowing them to tailor their education to one of the sectors above. The SHSM program provides opportunities to take focused courses, develop specialized skills and earn industry recognized certifications, preparing students for future careers in their chosen fields. AMSS will provide students with all compulsory Grade 11 and 12 courses at both the College and Workplace levels. Senior students can select a specialized two-credit tech course that runs for a half day, providing an even more immersive learning experience.
UNIQUE FEATURES
The Technological Education Hub at AMSS provides:
Grade 9 students with two tech credits in their first year of studies. Students will follow a tech rotation exploring 6 tech sectors
Mathematics and English courses designed to support students in the skilled trades by focusing on practical, trade-related applications
Physical Education and Visual Arts courses are delivered through a skilled trades lens, helping students make meaningful connections between creativity, wellness, and the world of work.
2-Credit Course Bundles - Provides Grade 11 and 12 students an immersive learning experience, allowing them to spend an entire morning or afternoon in their chosen trade. This extended time ensures deeper skill development and hands-on learning opportunities preparing students for success in their specialized field.
State-of-the-art facilities designed to provide hands-on learning experiences including:
Two greenhouses for horticulture and landscaping
A commercial kitchen for hospitality courses
A salon for students interested in hairstyling and aesthetics
A dedicated academic and clinical space for the Personal Support Worker Program
New and upgraded Construction, Manufacturing, and Transportation learning labs and classrooms are currently under construction
EXPLORE OUR SECTORS
Construction
Our Construction program provides hands-on experience with a focus on large scale projects and home renovations including framing, roofing, basic electrical techniques, and plumbing work.
Culinary Arts
Our commercial kitchen offers a spacious, professional environment where students can develop their culinary skills and gain hands-on experience in preparing a variety of culinary delights.
Hairstyling and Aesthetics
Our hairstyling and aesthetics program provides students with hands-on experience in styling, cutting and colouring. Students practice on both mannequins and peers in an expansive classroom suite that includes 20 hairstyling chairs and multiple sink basins.
Horticulture and Landscaping
Our horticulture and landscaping program provides students with hands-on experience in two fully equipped greenhouses, as well as access to vegetable and garden beds, fruit trees and on-site beehives. Additionally, our dedicated indoor project-based sandbox allows students to develop essential skills in landscape construction including paver stone installation and the construction of decks, steps, fire pits, and more.
Manufacturing & Welding
Our manufacturing and welding program provides students with both the theoretical knowledge and practical experience required in the industry. With 16 individual welding booths equipped with industry standard welding machines and tools, students develop their skills learning Shielded Metal Arc Welding (Stick), Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG) and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG). Students also have the opportunity to earn Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) certifications, preparing them for careers in the skilled trades.
Personal Support Worker Program
The Personal Support Worker (PSW) program consists of more than 660 hours of theoretical and experiential hands-on learning. Students learn and gain valuable work experience while participating in cooperative education placements in the healthcare field.

Transportation
Our transportation program features five fully equipped car lifts, providing students with hands-on experience in vehicle maintenance. In addition, students will have the opportunity to learn about small engine repair.
