The Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) has released board-wide results from the School Climate Survey conducted April 1-12, 2019. The survey gathered input from students in Grades 4-12, staff and parents/guardians to assist with planning programs and decision-making related to supporting safe and inclusive school environments.

A total of 8,356 students in Grades 4-12 participated in the online surveys, along with 1,674 parents/guardians and 693 staff. The surveys included a variety of questions on topics such as eating and sleeping habits to mental health, well-being and bullying. The surveys were developed with input from students, parents/guardians; school and Board administration, including Mental Health, Safe Schools and Indigenous Education representatives, and Chatham-Kent Public Health and Lambton Public Health.

Based on the responses, the majority of students feel their school is a welcoming and safe environment. Similarly, 90 per cent of parents/guardians feel their child's school is welcoming. Overall, most students report feeling happy with life, with more than 90 per cent of students indicating they have at least one close friend they can trust. More than half of the students surveyed feel a sense of belonging at school.

“I am pleased with the participation of students, staff and parent/guardians, as this information provides valuable insight for planning and implementing programs to support student achievement and well-being," said Director John Howitt. “We are committed to raising the bar for our students. Staff will be taking a closer look at individual school results, particularly students' sense of belonging; whether students feel schools are welcoming; and whether they have at least one caring adult they can trust. We look forward to continuing the conversations with students and parents/guardians as we work together to improve students' outcomes."

The LKDSB's Multi-Disciplinary Teams, which include principals, teachers and education workers, are reviewing individual school results to develop plans to support students and promote positive school climates. The individual school results will be publicly available on October 8.
