Ojibwe Word of the Day
Zaagidiwin
(zah-gide-win)
Meaning: Love
1. Black History Month – an annual celebration to commemorate the achievements of Black Canadians and their communities who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada a culturally diverse, compassionate, and prosperous country.
2. Marie-Joseph Angelique was an enslaved Black woman owned by Therese de Couagne de Francheville in Montreal. In 1734, she was charged with arson after a fire leveled Montreal’s merchants’ quarter. It was alleged that Angelique committed the act while attempting to flee her bondage. She was convicted, tortured and hanged. While it remains unknown whether or not she set the fire (she only confessed to the crime under torture and the evidence against her was circumstantial), Angeligue’s story has come to symbolize Black resistance and freedom.
3. Rosemary Brown – born 17 June 1930, was a politician whose personal experiences of racism and sexism fueled her passionate international advocacy efforts and lifelong fight for equality and human rights. She was born in Jamaica and moved to Canada in 1951. Elected to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia in 1972, Brown became the first Black woman in Canada to sit in a provincial legislature. Brown made history once again as only the second woman (and the first Black woman) ever to run for leadership of a federal political party. Her years of community service earned her numerous distinctions, including the Order of Canada, and honorary degrees from many Canadian Universities.

8. NLSS Junior Boys Basketball:
Last night our boys played an extremely strong first half of basketball against LCCVI as they took a 22-12 lead into half time. The Lancers changed their defensive tactics and forced our boys into far too many turnovers to be successful. In the end our boys lost 44-28. The boys look to avenge this collapse next Wednesday as they take on the same Lancers team in the semi-finals. Leading the way for the Eagles was Arie R with 11 points and Mason V with 8 points.
