The Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) is celebrating an extraordinary achievement in 2026, proudly sweeping the prestigious Dr. Jack Parry Awards and showcasing the remarkable strength, dedication, and character of its student-athletes.
Established in 1994, the Dr. Jack Parry Award honours graduating high school student-athletes across Chatham-Kent who exemplify excellence not only in athletics, but also in academics and community involvement. Each year, one male and one female student from participating schools are nominated, with recipients earning a $1,000 scholarship sponsored by the Parry family. To have multiple LKDSB students recognized at this level in the same year is a true testament to the board’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded, high-achieving learners.
Leading the way on the female side is Sophia Metcalfe of Lambton Kent Composite School, whose high school career has been nothing short of exceptional. A multi-sport athlete, Sophia demonstrated consistent excellence across basketball, volleyball, badminton, soccer, track and field, curling, and slo-pitch. From being named a Female Rookie of the Year in Grade 9 to captaining championship-winning teams in her senior year, her athletic journey is defined by both performance and leadership.
Sophia’s long list of accomplishments includes LKSSAA and SWOSSAA championships, multiple MVP and Coaches Choice awards, and consistent qualification for top-level competitions. Beyond athletics, her leadership and character have been recognized through honours such as the Beth Wilson Student Leadership Award, and earning Silver, Gold, and ultimately Wall of Fame distinction. Sophia represents the very essence of the Jack Parry Award—an elite athlete who leads with integrity, inspires others, and excels in every facet of school life.
On the male side, the award was shared by two outstanding LKDSB student-athletes: Noah Brinkman of John McGregor Secondary School and Ian Costello of Chatham-Kent Secondary School.
Noah Brinkman’s impact at JMSS goes far beyond athletic achievement. Serving as captain of ten different teams throughout his high school career, Noah consistently demonstrated leadership, sportsmanship, and a relentless commitment to excellence. He balanced his academics, athletics, part-time work, and an impressive 750+ hours of volunteer service, making meaningful contributions to his school and broader community. His journey reflects a deep understanding that success is measured not only by accomplishments, but by the positive difference one makes in the lives of others. Noah will continue his path at Redeemer University, pursuing an Honours Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology.
Ian Costello’s achievements at CKSS highlight a truly elite level of athletic performance. A standout in volleyball and basketball, Ian is best known for his dominance in track and field as a premier discus thrower. His accolades include being named Junior Athlete of the Year, earning MVP and Coaches Choice honours, and placing seventh at OFSAA. In Grade 11, Ian broke a 45-year-old school record in discus, and he capped off his senior year by capturing both LKSSAA and SWOSSAA titles.
Off the field, Ian is equally impactful. He serves as an executive member of the school’s athletic association and contributes his leadership to programs such as Camp Hawk and Muskoka Woods. His commitment to community organizations—including the Chatham Ballhawks, Kent Basketball Academy, and Goodfellows—demonstrates a strong dedication to service, all while maintaining Honours with Distinction in his academic studies.
Together, Sophia Metcalfe, Noah Brinkman, and Ian Costello represent the very best of LKDSB. Their accomplishments reflect the power of perseverance, leadership, and community spirit, and their recognition at the 2026 Dr. Jack Parry Awards is a moment of immense pride for the entire district.
Congratulations to these exceptional student-athletes for an outstanding sweep—your achievements have set a new standard of excellence and inspired your schools and communities in lasting ways.
