Dear Northern Collegiate Institute & Vocational School Students and Families:
I am writing to inform you that a former Lambton Kent District School Board teacher, Melissa Lefebvre, pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation and has been sentenced to 14 months incarceration, plus a two-year probation. There is a publication ban in place to protect the identity of the victim.
This teacher has not been in the school since the allegations were made and the LKDSB terminated her employment following the guilty plea.
The LKDSB provided an update to the Ontario College of Teachers regarding this matter. Under the Protecting Students Act, 2016, Ontario teachers found guilty of professional misconduct involving sexual offences face a mandatory loss of their teaching certification.
I wanted to inform you of this, as the LKDSB values open and transparent dialogue with its students, families and the community.
Please be assured that the LKDSB is committed to offering safe and caring learning environments for all students. I feel it is important to note that LKDSB staff will ensure all students receive the necessary supports in order to mitigate the impact on students' success.
