The Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) is participating in Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week from November 18-22, 2019 to help promote safe, welcoming and inclusive learning and work environments.

During this week, students, staff and parents/guardians are encouraged to learn more about bullying and its effect on student learning and well-being.

According to the 2019 School Climate Survey results, the majority of students in Grades 4-12 know how to report bullying. Similarly, the majority of parents/guardians feel they can contact their child's school with their concerns.

To report bullying, students are encouraged to share information with a caring adult at home or at school. Parents/guardians and students are also able to share concerns using the Student Wellness and Bullying Intervention Hotline at each school.

“Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week is an opportunity to reinforce the important lessons about the different forms of bullying; encourage students to connect with caring adults; and highlight the resources available to support students with concerns," said Director John Howitt. “We remain committed to working together to promote positive learning and work environments so that students and staff feel safe and welcome in our schools."

Bullying is typically a form of repeated, persistent, and aggressive behaviour that occurs in a context of real or perceived power imbalance between individuals. Bullying can be represented in various forms – physical, verbal, social and electronic. This behavior has a negative impact on a student's well-being and ability to learn, and compromises the overall school climate.

LKDSB schools, with support from Safe Schools and Multi-Disciplinary Teams, will be participating in a variety of activities throughout the week to promote bullying awareness and prevention.
