This letter is to notify you of an incident that occurred on Wednesday, March 6 at approximately 7:15 a.m.
An unknown man approached Lambton Kent District School Board secondary students waiting at a bus stop in the Merlin area. The individual attempted to engage in conversation with the students. The students were able to leave the area without incident.
The incident was reported to the respective schools and Chatham-Kent Police were contacted. The parents/guardians of the students involved have been notified.
Chatham-Kent Police Service has investigated the incident and apprehended an individual and the person remains in police custody. Police believe this is an isolated incident and do not believe there is any threat to public safety.
Student safety is a top priority for the Lambton Kent District School Board. As part of an ongoing approach to ensure student safety, parents and guardians are encouraged to speak with their children about personal safety strategies.
Teachers address the topic of personal safety with our students in age-appropriate ways as part of the regular curriculum, and as the need arises, to reinforce these important lessons.

Suspicious Person call
On Wednesday, March 6th, 2019 at approximately 7:15 am, Police were called to investigate a suspicious person in the community of Merlin. Police received information that a male had approached several high school age students waiting for their bus. The male's behavior was suspicious, which prompted a call to the Chatham-Kent Police Service. Officers located the suspect and took him into custody for an unrelated reason.
At this time, police do not believe there is an imminent threat to public safety.
