Landen Willimot, a rising star in the world of boxing, has been making waves both in the ring and in his studies, earning praise and admiration from his school community and beyond.
At just 13 years old, Willimot, who boxes for the Kent Athletic Youth Organization, has an impressive boxing record of 17 wins and only 3 losses. His hard work has already earned him top honours, including being crowned the Provincial Champion and Golden Gloves Champion in the 60-kilogram (Junior B) division. This is a remarkable feat, and it's made even more impressive by the fact that Willimot's boxing journey began at just 6 years old when he fought in his first official round.
One of Willimot's most significant achievements is being named the Brampton Cup Champion, the largest tournament of its kind in North America, a title that has placed him among the best young boxers in the continent – twice! Despite his early success, Landen remains focused on his development, both as an athlete and as a student.
A true testament to his heritage, Landen is part of a 5th-generation boxing family. His mother, a three-time national champion, and his father, a former provincial and Winter Games champion, have clearly passed on their passion and skills for the sport to their son. With such a strong lineage, it’s no surprise that Landen has shown such natural talent and drive in the ring.
But boxing is not the only arena where Landen excels. He has been a student with the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) since junior kindergarten and continues to thrive academically at King George VI Public School in Chatham. His teachers and peers are incredibly supportive of his boxing endeavors, regularly celebrating his successes and encouraging him to balance his athletic and academic pursuits.
“Landen is a great representation of what we aspire students to be at King George VI in Chatham,” said King George VI School Principal, Danielle Maryschak. “He is polite, enthusiastic, and always tries to be a great “KING”! He works with our younger students as a monitor in one of our primary classes and is a leader on our sports teams as a Grade 8 student. We are so excited to see how Landen finishes off his elementary career at King George!”
Willimot plans to continue his LKDSB career, attending Chatham-Kent Secondary School for high school, where he hopes to further his education while maintaining hisfocus on boxing. His commitment to both his studies and his sport has made him a source of pride for the entire school community.
"The staff were so excited for Landen,” said Maryschak. “Even before students arrived at school on Monday morning, many staff were discussing his great achievement that had hit the local news. All of our staff at King George are invested in seeing our students be successful both in school, as well as in their lives outside of our classrooms.”
