Letter to parents/guardians re: Technology Enriched Learning Plan (TELP) Update

March 07, 2019

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As you may be aware, the LKDSB Technology Enriched Learning Plan (TELP) has been under review for several years. As a result of this ongoing review, Senior Administration has decided to reconfigure TELP for the 2019-2020 school year, based on current budget constraints and anticipated further Ministry funding reductions.

For several years, the LKDSB's TELP initiative received substantial funding through the Ministry of Education's Technology Learning Fund grant. However, those funds were eliminated as of the 2017-2018 school year. Senior Administration was faced with a challenging decision on the future of TELP in spring of 2018 and was able to provide one-time funding for the 2018-2019 school year.

As in previous years, Senior Administration continued to consult during the 2018-2019 school year with students, parents/guardians, teachers and school administrators to make an informed decision regarding the future of the TELP initiative.

Considering the ongoing and anticipated funding reductions, Senior Administration decided to revise the TELP initiative as follows for the 2019-2020 school year:

Current Grade 7 students' TELP iPads

iPads will be collected in June 2019 to be reimaged and returned to the respective elementary school for use as class sets.  These devices will be distributed within the school based on local priorities as determined by the Principal.

Students' school-to-home iPad privileges will no longer apply.

No iPads will be distributed to the Grade 7 students in 2019-2020 school year.

Current Grade 8 students' TELP iPads

iPads will be collected in June 2019 and returned to the same students who will continue their Grade 9 classwork in September 2019 with the assistance of the TELP iPad as per past practice.

These students will receive the same iPads for the 2020-2021 school year (with annual collection in June 2020 as per past practice), depending upon iPad condition and parental sign-off.

No iPads will be distributed to the Grade 8 students in 2019-2020 school year.

This will mark the end of the current 1-to-1 iPad initiative for all elementary students.

Current Grade 9 students' TELP iPads

iPads will be collected in June 2019 and returned to the same students in September 2019 to continue their Grade 10 classwork with the assistance of the TELP iPad as per past practice and depending on iPad condition and parental sign-off.

These students will return their iPads in June 2020, as per past practice and iPads will be reimaged by the Information Technology Department for redeployment across the LKDSB (depending on iPad condition).

Current Grade 10 students' TELP iPads

As per past practice, iPads will be returned to the Information Technology Department in June 2019 for reimaging and possible redeployment across the LKDSB (depending on iPad condition and Board-wide priorities).

During the 2019-2020 school year, any student interested in a BYOD model is encouraged to return their LKDSB TELP iPad to the school for redeployment across the LKDSB.

As stated in the LKDSB Belief Statements, Senior Administration remains committed to continuous innovation and improvement, along with technology-enriched learning. While fiscal restraints may limit the purchase of new iPads as per the current 1-to-1 iPad initiative, staff has been advised to continue the integration of technology in the classroom. This includes inviting students to bring their own devices to class to access digital resources.

With the possible expansion of student device options, staff will be conscientious of student device choice when developing technology-enriched learning opportunities to ensure students have equitable access to lesson content, as per the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.

We appreciate your understanding as we move forward. Should you have any further questions, please contact your school principal.

Sincerely,

Jim Costello
Director of Education
