Important Update re: March Break postponed to April 12-16

February 12, 2021

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

Thank you for your support for a smooth transition to in-person learning this week. As you may be aware, on Thursday, February 11, the Minister of Education announced that March Break, which was scheduled for March 15-19, 2021, has been postponed to a Spring Break on April 12-16, 2021. The Ministry's decision was made based on the advice of Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health and public health officials, including consultations with many local Medical Officers of Health.

Read the provincial media release here.

Based on this update, the week of March 15-19 will be instructional days for all students attending both in-person and at the Virtual Learn at Home Elementary and Secondary Schools and April 12-16 will now be vacation days with no instruction provided for Kindergarten to Grade 12 students. We wanted to inform you of this change as soon as possible as we understand that many families may have to amend their plans and childcare arrangements based on this announcement.

Please be assured that supporting the mental health and well-being of students and staff are priorities for the LKDSB. Visit the LKDSB website for helpful resources and information for parents/guardians. If you have any questions or concerns about your child, please contact your school to learn about available supports.

Secondary Students

To support the transition to the fourth quadmester and allow time for secondary schools to prepare classrooms for the transition of students, Friday, April 9, 2021 will be a quadmester transition day and it will not be an instructional day for secondary students in quadmestered courses. As such, secondary students in quadmestered courses will not report to school on Friday, April 9, nor will Virtual Learn at Home Secondary School students be expected to log into their virtual classes on this day. The first day of the fourth quadmester is Monday, April 19.

Supports for Students With Special Education Needs

Any meetings scheduled during the week of April 12-16 with families to support students with special education needs, including IPRC meetings, will be rescheduled on a new date.

Moving Between Face-to-Face Learning and Learn at Home

Families wishing to transfer between face-to-face learning and Learn at Home must notify their child's school by Monday, March 22. Elementary and secondary students begin their new program type on Monday, April 19.

The LKDSB continues to follow directions from the Ministry of Education and local and provincial public health officials. Additional information and resources are available on the LKDSB website. Information is also available on Chatham-Kent Public Health and Lambton Public Health websites.

The health and well-being of students and staff remains the top priorities for the LKDSB. Together, we will continue to support the safe operation of schools.

If you have a specific question or concern about your child, please contact your school directly as messages are checked regularly.

We wish you and your family a safe and relaxing Family Day weekend.

Sincerely,

John Howitt
Director of Education
