Important Update for Elementary Parents/Guardians

April 29, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This update shares information about elementary students' learning, graduation, athletics, and report cards.

Remote Learning for Students from Kindergarten to Grade 8

Teacher-led staff-supported student learning will continue to provide the opportunity for students to be engaged in learning. Kindergarten to Grade 6 students are asked to engage in learning for about 5 hours per week. Grade 7 and Grade 8 students are asked to engage in learning for about 10 hours per week. These hours include learning led by teachers, as well as the time students take to complete tasks assigned by their teacher. Teachers have scheduled regular times during which students are able to seek additional assistance with assigned tasks. School support staff are also available for additional support.

Remote learning allows students and families to have a choice in how they organize their day. There is no set class time for students to be online. Students are encouraged to make every effort to complete all assigned learning tasks, assignments and projects, and to communicate proactively with their teacher if they are unable to complete assigned work. Continuity of learning is critical for students to be prepared with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the next grade.

Read a letter to parents/guardians from the Minister of Education.

Elementary Athletics

Upcoming central or district athletic events and teams will be cancelled for the remainder of the 2019 – 2020 school year.  The remaining activity impacted is Track and Field.

Grade 8 Graduation Activities

Grade 8 Graduation activities are postponed.

Final Report Cards for Elementary Students

Final report cards will be issued for all students in June.

We appreciate the ongoing dedication and commitment of our staff to support student success. Within a short period of time, our system has transitioned to remote student learning and developed innovative solutions to support student learning and connect with colleagues for peer learning and support during the COVID-19 school closures.

We will continue to keep you informed as the situation evolves and as more information becomes available. We appreciate your support and understanding through this process. Please continue to visit the LKDSB website for up-to-date information (www.lkdsb.net).

Wishing you and your family health and well-being at this time.

Sincerely,
John Howitt
Director of Education
