COVID-19 Update - April 27, 2020

April 27, 2020

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

The Ontario Minister of Education has announced that schools will remain closed to students until May 31, 2020, due to the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, all Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) schools will remain closed to students until May 31.

The province's announcement may be found at this link.

The Ministry of Education is also moving forward to replace the remainder of Professional Activity (PA) days and examination days with instructional time, as well as the introduction of an expanded summer learning program that will focus on credit recovery, supports for vulnerable students, and course upgrading. Clarification about marks, school examination days, culmination activities, exams and Professional Activity (PA) days will be provided in the coming days.

In light of the Ministry announcement, we know LKDSB staff, students and families will have additional considerations and planning moving forward. In part, you may be looking to access the school to retrieve your child's personal items. At this time, the provincial Medical Officer of Health is not allowing students to access school buildings. As well, due to Ontario's Emergency Order, there are limitations to staff access to buildings and any access must be coordinated with the local Medical Officers of Health.

Based on the expectations outlined by the Ministry of Education, LKDSB educators will continue Phase 2 of Learn at Home. Any information regarding the extension of the 2019-2020 school year would be determined by the Ministry of Education.

Please be assured that we are committed to a continuity of remote teacher-led, staff supported student learning. Should your child require additional resources and supports, including technological devices, to assist with your child's learning, please contact your child's teacher or the school principal to discuss further.

After careful consideration, LKDSB has decided to postpone Grade 8 and secondary graduation ceremonies.

As we continue to learn together, please stay connected to your school community. As with any time throughout the school year, should your child need any additional learning support or if you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's educators, support staff or the school principal. A list of additional supports and resources, including mental health information, is available on the LKDSB's Learn at Home webpage.

We appreciate the ongoing dedication and commitment of our staff to support student success. Within a short period of time, our system has transition to remote student learning and developed innovative solutions to support student learning and connect with colleagues for peer learning and support during the COVID-19 school closures.

We will continue to keep you informed as the situation evolves and as more information becomes available. We appreciate your support and understanding through this process. Please continue to visit the LKDSB website for up-to-date information (www.lkdsb.net).

Wishing you and your family health and well-being at this time.

Sincerely,
John Howitt
Director of Education
