On May 17, 2023, the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) recognizes the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOTB). On this date, LKDSB celebrates sexual and gender diversities and denounces discrimination and violence experienced by LGBTQ+ people.

Everyone has a right to an education free from discrimination and oppression. The LKDSB's Strategic Priority, “Inclusive Diversity: Champion anti-oppressive education," the Safe Schools Act and the protected grounds under the Ontario Human Rights Code reinforce the importance of recognizing and affirming the rights of LGBTQ+ communities, particularly the human rights of everyone to be treated equally and with dignity and respect. Through education, awareness and understanding, LKDSB is committed to supporting safe, equitable and inclusive learning and work environments.

The LKDSB denounces discrimination on the basis of sex, gender identities, gender expression or sexual orientation. The LKDSB considers homophobia, gender-based violence, and harassment on the basis of sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, (...) and/or any other immutable characteristic or ground protected by the Human Rights Code, as well as sexualized behaviour, to be unacceptable. The LKDSB supports the use of positive practices to prevent such behaviour.

It is a collective responsibility to support positive school climates. This will ensure that students feel welcomed and a sense of belonging in their school communities, as well as contribute to students' academic achievement and overall mental health and well-being.
For more information about the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, visit: https://may17.org/ In further support of LGBTQ+ communities, the Pride Flag will be displayed at all LKDSB facilities during the month of June.

Visit the Frequently Asked Questions webpage for additional information.

Should you have any concerns about a student's safety and well-being, we encourage you to contact your school directly to discuss your concerns and learn more about student supports that are available.

Together we will ensure that all students have access to barrier- and oppression-free education regardless of sex, gender identities, gender expression or sexual orientation and foster inclusive workspaces for all staff.
