The Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) is recognizing National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21. On this day and throughout the year, the LKDSB honours the history, heritage and diversity of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

June is National Indigenous History Month, a time for all Canadians to reflect upon and learn the history, sacrifices, cultures, contributions, and strength of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people. The LKDSB believes student success is achieved through the shared responsibility of students, staff, families, community and Indigenous partners, and supports the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action as they relate to education.

In partnership with the four First Nation communities within its catchment area, LKDSB is building capacity and encouraging further understanding and education about Indigenous ways of knowing, world views and histories. The LKDSB is committed to promoting the success and well-being of self-identified Indigenous students.

The LKDSB is celebrating and honouring National Indigenous Peoples Day by hosting “Weaving the Braid of Unity” Virtual Summit, on June 19, 2020 at 1-4 p.m., in collaboration with 10 other school boards. The event, organized by school board Indigenous Leads, highlights influential voices from communities abroad, sharing their wisdom and gifts with students, families, teachers, staff, and communities as a whole. Indigenous traditional drummers, singers, artists, dancers, authors and youth leaders, etc. from various First Nations, Métis, and Inuit backgrounds will be participating in the event. Additional guest speakers, artists, writers, and entertainers will include: Theland Kicknosway, Grandmother Eva Nicholas, Dr. Niigaan Sinclair, Susan Aglukark, Isaac Murdoch, Rebekah Wilson, and Drew Hayden Taylor. Join the livestream at www.hcdsb.org.

“As the LKDSB works to implement its strategic priorities, particularly “Inclusive Diversity: Champion anti-oppressive education,”we continue ongoing work with First Nation communities to support the education and understanding of Indigenous histories and perspectives in our schools and across the system,” said Director John Howitt. “In addition to recognizing National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, the LKDSB is committed to honouring thehistory, heritage and diversity of Indigenous peoples in Canada throughout the school year.”

“The LKDSB appreciates the educational partnerships with Aamjiwnaang First Nation, Eelŭnaapéewi Lahkéewiit (Delaware Nation), Kettle & Stony Point First Nation, and Bkejwanong (Walpole Island) First Nation to promote students’ success and well-being,” said Chair Jane Bryce. “Through our ongoing commitment to championing anti-oppressive education, we continue to work together to ensure Indigenous histories and perspectives are incorporated into Board decision-making and directions moving forward.”
