Treaties Recognition Week Nov. 6-10

October 30, 2017

As we approach Treaties Recognition Week in the first week of November, schools are working towards greater understanding of treaties, treaty relationships, and the responsibilities we have to raise awareness about Indigenous histories, cultures, contributions and perspectives.

At Principal Council, principals learned about treaties that are in place in Ontario. Each school has received a Treaty Kit, which contains resources to support educating students about treaties and raise awareness about this important aspect of Ontario's history.

Some elementary and secondary teachers are receiving more in-depth training in order to lead their schools towards greater understanding as part of our commitment to implementing the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions Call to Action in Education.

Treaty Week, November 6-10, will also mark the official implementation of the Traditional Territorial Acknowledgement. The Traditional Territorial Acknowledgement has quickly become an important component of the opening exercises in our schools and at LKDSB Board meetings.

Please find attached a letter from Deputy Minister Bruce Rodrigues which contains additional resources to support your preparations for this important week.

In the spirit of reconciliation,

Helen Lane
