This month Black History and African Heritage is being celebrated in the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB). In recognition of Black History/African Heritage during the month of February, the LKDSB is committed to recognizing the historically erased role of Black Canadians in our history and society. The focus this year for Black History/African Heritage Month is “Black Innovation”.
There is a wealth of information available about the contributions that Black Canadians have and are making in Canada and around the world. While Black Innovation is highlighted this month, the history of Black Canadians is embedded in the LKDSB curriculum throughout the year.
As there are significant Black historic sites located within the LKDSB geographic area, we encourage students, staff and families to learn more about our local history and its connections to the Underground Railroad and other historical events, and the ongoing contributions of local Black Communities to the development of prosperity of Ontario and Canada. Local organizations in Lambton County and Chatham-Kent are also celebrating Black History and African Heritage Month and have provided information about opportunities in the respective county in which your school is located. The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has a variety of activities planned for Black History Month.
In addition to activities promoted during the month of February, LKDSB students, families and staff members are invited to explore the rich history in the surrounding area and learn more about how African Canadian history can be incorporated into the curriculum. Local Black Historic Sites
Buxton National Historic Site: Buxton National Historic Site aims to provide educational programming to support students in gaining a better understanding of the roots of racial prejudices, as well as the progress that has been made since the era of the Underground Railroad, in eradicating those prejudices from our society. The museum's main purpose is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret historical artifacts related to the Elgin (Buxton) Settlement from its founding in 1849 to the late 19th century. Josiah Henson Museum of African-Canadian History: The Josiah Henson Museum commemorates the life of Rev. Josiah Henson (1796-1883). This historic site recognizes Rev. Henson's contributions to the abolition movement and his work in the Underground Railroad, as well as his connection to Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin.
