Refresh Educator Conference Offers Sessions on Diverse Topics from Leaders in Education

About 200 educators from the Lambton Kent and St. Clair Catholic district school boards will gather next week for the Refresh Educator Conference, at venues in Dresden and Wallaceburg.

"We have assembled an impressive and diverse line-up of speakers and are very excited to offer sessions by these important leaders in education," says Laura Callaghan, Superintendent of Education, St. Clair Catholic District School Board.  "We know it will be a valuable week of learning for our staff."

"The Refresh Educator Conference is a demonstration of the LKDSB's commitment to fostering student success through innovation and continuous improvement," says Ben Hazzard, Superintendent of Education, Lambton Kent District School Board. "We are pleased to offer staff an opportunity to build capacity, collaborate with peers and learn from leading education experts."

The Refresh Educator Conference is organized and jointly funded by LKDSB and St. Clair Catholic.  A schedule of speakers, topics and venues is listed below.  Members of the media are welcome to attend.

Monday, August 20

  • Anne Davies, PhD researcher and author of Making Classroom Assessment Work and Knowing What Counts.  Assessment for learning is the focus of this session.  Learn how to give practical, timely and specific descriptive feedback in relation to success criteria. – 9am to 2pm – Dresden Arena, 1212 North Street, Dresden.
  • Diane Kashin, MEd, PhD Education, Early Childhood Education Teacher.  This session will focus on playing and learning outdoors.  How can we build our capacity to engage ourselves and our learners in outdoor, experiential environments? – 9am to 2pm – Kinsmen Community Centre, 1416 Dufferin Avenue, Wallaceburg; and Peers Wetland, 29644 Kimball Road, Wallaceburg.

Tuesday, August 21

  • Steven Langlois, Member of the FrEd Matters Presentation Team.  This session will explore resources for the French as a Second Language classroom, to make learning relevant and engaging. – 9am – 11:45am – Lambton Kent Composite School, 231 St. George Street, Dresden.
  • Corrie DeNure, Educator, Lambton Kent DSB and member of the FrEd Matters Presentation Team.  This session will explore strategies to leverage technology in the second language classroom.  12:45pm – 2:30pm – Lambton Kent Composite School, 231 St. George Street, Dresden.
  • Cathy Marks Krpan, Former classroom teacher, District Education Consultant and award-winning author and teacher at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.  This session will engage K-Grade 3 educators in learning focussed on Teaching Math with Meaning.  9am – 11:30am – Dresden Arena, 1212 North Street, Dresden.
  • Cathy Marks Krpan – This session is for educators in Grades 4–12.  β€“ 12pm – 3pm – Dresden Arena, 1212 North Street, Dresden.

Wednesday, August 22

  • Ann Pigeon, Ministry of Education Student Achievement Officer, focusing on improving mathematics instruction in elementary classrooms.  This session will focus on part-whole relationships that occur everywhere in the math curriculum.  Once students start to understand that, everything starts to make sense!  9am – 11:30am – Dresden Arena, 1212 North Street, Dresden.
  • Diane Riehl, Ministry of Education Student Achievement Officer and a leader in the field of Early Years.  This session will explore the power and wonder of learning in our youngest students. – 12:30pm – 3pm – Dresden Arena, 1212 North Street, Dresden.

Thursday, August 23

  • Kathy Gould Lundy, Author of many titles including Conquering the Crowded Curriculum.  In this session, educators will discover innovative ways to conquer the many curricular challenges in today's diverse classrooms.  Learn how to collaboratively weave authentic learning tapestries and simple ways to build on the four principles of inquiry, innovation, identity and integration to form a creative framework for delivering curriculum.  – 9am – 2pm – Dresden Arena, 1212 North Street, Dresden.
