July 16, 2018

Dear Lambton Kent District School Board Students and Families:

I am writing to inform you that a Lambton Kent District School Board teacher, Melissa Lefebvre, has pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation. There is a publication ban in place to protect the identity of the victim. Her sentencing date is scheduled for September.

This teacher has not been in the school since the allegations were made and the LKDSB has terminated employment following the guilty plea.

The LKDSB will be providing an update to the Ontario College of Teachers. Under the Protecting Students Act, 2016, Ontario teachers found guilty of professional misconduct involving sexual offences face a mandatory loss of their teaching certification.

I wanted to inform you of this, as the LKDSB values open and transparent dialogue with its students, families and the community.

Please be assured that the LKDSB is committed to offering a safe and caring learning environment for all students. When the school year resumes, I feel it is important to note that LKDSB staff will ensure all students receive the necessary supports in order to mitigate the impact on students' success.

If you have any questions, please contact your principal.

Sincerely,

Jim Costello
Director of Education
Lambton Kent District School Board
