On December 3rd, the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) will join the global community in recognizing the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). This annual observance is a significant opportunity to reflect on the importance of inclusion, accessibility, and the contributions of persons with disabilities in all areas of life.
The theme for this year’s IDPD focuses on raising awareness about the rights, dignity, and full participation of persons with disabilities, while highlighting the importance of creating accessible and supportive environments for all. Across LKDSB, we encourage staff and students to engage in activities and conversations designed to foster understanding and celebrate the diverse abilities of students, staff, and community members.
“This day is a reminder of the importance of making our schools, programs, and activities accessible to all students and ensuring that every learner has the opportunity to participate and succeed,” states John Howitt, Director of Education for LKDSB. “It is crucial that we continue to champion diversity and inclusion as core values within our school communities.”
In honour of the day, students and staff are encouraged to participate in activities, including reflection exercises that highlight the achievements and challenges of persons with disabilities. The LKDSB also invites families and community members to join in this important observance, as we collectively work towards breaking down barriers and building a more inclusive society.
We recognize the importance of this day not only on December 3rd but as part of our ongoing commitment to ensure that every individual, regardless of ability, feels valued and included in all aspects of life at the LKDSB.
