On Wednesday, June 19, 2019, officials from Walpole Island First Nation and the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) signed an Education Services Agreement at the Harriett Jacobs Centre at Wallaceburg District Secondary School.

The Education Services Agreement recognizes the Walpole Island First Nation and the Lambton Kent District School Board agree to work collaboratively recognizing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action. It also affirms many current practices in schools and supports further intercultural learning and understanding. The agreement will be in place until 2022.

"The signing of the Education Services Agreement marks the continuation of the strong partnership between Walpole Island First Nation and the Lambton Kent District School Board," said Walpole Island First Nation Chief Dan Miskokomon. "We appreciate the cooperative efforts of those involved in the development of the agreement and we look forward to continuing to work together to provide these educational services."

"We are pleased to sign the Education Services Agreement with Walpole Island First Nation, as this renews the continued partnership between the community and the LKDSB," said Chair Jane Bryce. "Through the Education Services Agreement, the LKDSB and Walpole Island First Nation will work collaboratively to support the academic achievement and well-being for Indigenous students, as well as provide opportunities for all students to learn and understand the history and culture of Walpole Island First Nation."

This is the third Education Services Agreement between Walpole Island First Nation and LKDSB since the first agreement between the two parties was established in 2007. The agreement supports the provision of accommodation, instruction and additional services in schools.
