What is Web 2.0?

  • This term refers to the new generation of the internet
  • The internet is no longer just a source for information
  • The internet is now Read/Write
  • Everyone has the ability to publish to the web

The Machine is Us/ing Us - from YouTube

What are the Web 2.0 technologies? Here are a few:

  • Blog - This is a website generally maintained by one person.  The format of a blog resembles a conversation.  Blog settings  can allow no audience, only invited individuals or anyone to view the blog.  The settings can do the same with rights to post comments or replies to the authors posts (no one, only invited individuals or anyone).  Blog topics are many and varied:  commentary on a particular subject, news, current events, book reviews, personal diaries, etc., the possibilities are endless
  • Wiki - This is a collaborative website where settings can allow only invited individuals or anyone, to edit the wiki
  • Social Networking Sites (Facebook, MySpace)
  • Instant Messaging (MSN, Google Talk, Twitter)
  • Podcast - Record audio and/or video clips and post to the internet
  • Screencast - Capture your computer screen as a video and post to the internet.
  • Upload Video (YouTube, TeacherTube)
  • Upload Photos, photo sharing (Flickr)
  • Bookmarking (del.icio.us, Google Bookmark)
  • RSS (Really Simple Syndication) - The format used to publish on frequently updated internet sites such as Blogs, Wiki's, Podcasts, News Feeds, etc.  An RSS Reader such as Google Reader, allows users to select websites to be monitored.  When there is new content on the site, it will be sent to the user's account i.e. a new post on a blog will be sent to the user's RSS Reader account.  This is essentially like your newspaper and magazine subscriptions arriving at your home.
  • Have your favourite websites delivered to you via an account with iGoogle or PageFlake for regular viewing.  This provides links to several websites, your favourite websites, all on one page.
