Trustees Approve Consolidation of Forest Area of Schools into a Kindergarten to Grade 12 School at a Site to be Determined

March 28, 2017

At the March 21 Special Board Meeting, Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) Senior Administration presented the Addendum to the Final Staff Report on the Consolidation of Aberarder Central School, Bosanquet Central School, Kinnwood Central School and North Lambton Secondary School into a Kindergarten to Grade 12 School. After carefully considering the recommendations by Senior Administration and the information gathered during the community consultations, Trustees of the LKDSB approved the following motions:

“That the Board approve the consolidation of Aberarder Central School, Bosanquet Central School, Kinnwood Central School and North Lambton Secondary School into a Kindergarten to Grade 12 School on a site to be determined as of September 1, 2020 and the submission of grant applications to the Ministry of Education for funding for the construction of the new school and the acquisition of land; and that the Board close Aberarder Central School, Bosanquet Central School, Kinnwood Central School and North Lambton Secondary School as of July 1, 2020.”

“That the Board approve the establishment of an Ad Hoc Naming Committee to recommend to the Board a name for the consolidated Kindergarten to Grade 12 Aberarder Central School, Bosanquet Central School, Kinnwood Central School and North Lambton Secondary School and appoint two Trustees to serve on the Committee, in the event that the Ministry approves the grant request for the construction of a Kindergarten to Grade 12 school.”

The LKDSB has applied to the Ministry of Education for capital funds to build a new Kindergarten to Grade 12 school and is expecting to receive an update from the Ministry on the funding application in May 2017. If the Ministry of Education does not provide funding, Senior Administration will communicate with parents and guardians regarding next steps.

“We understand that the pupil accommodation process can be challenging for communities and we appreciate the engagement of parents, students, staff and local residents during this process, including offering support for a consolidated school built on a new site in the Town of Forest,” said LKDSB Director Jim Costello. “If we receive funding from the Ministry of Education for the construction of a new school, this consolidation will enable the LKDSB to offer program enhancements that meet the needs of our students and we will work with our local partners to plan an inclusive school environment that is beneficial to student learning and embraces the traditions of its communities.”

If funding is approved, the Principals of the schools involved will be working with Senior Administration to form the Transition Committee to oversee all “on the ground” details of consolidating the students and staff at the Kindergarten to Grade 12 school site for September 2020.
