Individual

logs-DAY 1 write what you know about pioneer life;

logs DAY 2+-each day record what you learned and tell your opinions about your findings

vocabulary - keep a record of all pioneer theme words which you discover and be sure to give the meaning of each (eg. grist mills, pioneers, settlement, general store, blacksmith, St. Lawrence River, Great Lakes, Aboriginal peoples, wainwright, wheelwright, coopersmith, mid-wife, apothecary)

settler's role- each student will choose a different role in the pioneer society after consultation with teacher

- describe the job or role and its responsibilities

- tools used, natural resources needed

- why was this job was necessary to the settlement

- clothing worn

- family responsibilities

find supplies to recreate a costume that your character might have worn

 Group

plan and draw your settlement using the information you learned in your research (use paper provided by teacher)

wearing your costumes, share with the class a few paragraphs describing your groups' characters and their roles in the settlement

submit written paragraphs to teacher

make a T-chart, to be posted in class, comparing each character's way of life to a similar present day character

Class

use atlases to locate and label on a world map the countries of origin and areas of settlement of the pioneers

through map study search for patterns indicating why settlement sites were chosen (ie.transportation, natural resources, terrain, climate)

compile observations from student presentations to discover the general roles and lifestyles of male and female pioneers
