PRESENTATION - MINISTRY
AUTISM PROJECT UPDATE |
|
|
Denise Emery, Ministry Autism Project Co-ordinator, provided SEAC with an update on her involvement with the “Supporting Models of Collaborative Service Delivery for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Project”. Over the 2007-2008 school year the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, in collaboration with relevant community agencies, have been supporting seven school boards in the implementation of collaborative services delivery models for students with ASD. The Lambton Kent District School Board and the St. Clair Catholic District School Board were selected jointly to participate in the project. The system outcomes of this initiative include: ·
improved teacher and school capacity to meet
the needs of students with ASD · improved collaboration between the service provider/community agency and the local school/board, and · broad dissemination of research and effective inter-disciplinary practices within boards and across the province. The goals of the collaborative service delivery model for students with ASD are: · confirm current successful and community delivery models supporting the educational outcomes of students with ASD · build on these models · advance inter-disciplinary practices in schools with respect to students with ASD; and · advance the research and knowledge mobilization on effective educational practices for students with ASD. D. Emery also explained that she is a member of the Provincial Advisory Team which has been established to co-ordinate all sites and to disseminate province-wide research information to school boards and community agencies. The Provincial Advisory Team will be responsible for co-ordinating the evaluation and making recommendations for programming and support for next year. A local Regional Leadership Team has also been established to manage the implementation of the model and provide the necessary liaison for sharing information and research/data with the Provincial Advisory Team and school boards. The local joint project involves the establishment of “centres of
excellence” at two schools: Other local initiatives include: · teams from all schools are currently in the midst of intensive Applied Behaviour Analysis training as mandated by the Ministry of Education. · province-wide training from the Geneva Centre for Educational Assistants. E. Hudie made a comment on how hard the staff works to apply for different projects to acquire some of the extra dollars the Ministry is willing to allocate. |

R. Dodman wanted to commend everyone on this committee for their professionalism and team approach. N. Hills reminded everyone of the Sixth Annual Mayor’s Luncheon
