Take Our Kids To Work Program |
||||||||||||
|
Description of the Program Grade 9 students across the Canada accompany a parent, relative or community volunteer to work for one day during the first week of November. They job shadow their sponsor to observe the workplace skills that are required at this particular business, institution or agency. This program helps Grade 9 students connect school, the world of work, and their own futures. History Beginning in 1994 both the former Lambton and Kent boards became charter members of the “Take Our Kids To Work” program. ü
Through this program we invest in the workplace of the future by:
ü Helping students make the link
between their education and their future careers;
ü Enabling students to begin exploring
career options through workplace visits;
ü Supporting career education by
helping students understand the real world of work;
ü Promoting student interest in
various fields of endeavor; ü Showcasing workplaces as positive and supportive environments that contribute to the community. Purpose of the Program During
“Take Our Kids to Work” employers highlight workplace skills that
are needed to succeed in our competitive economy. For instance
employees of the future will need to be adaptable to change,
withstand stress, work in a multicultural environment and
commit to becoming a life-long learner. Students will also see the need to be critical thinkers, accepting of criticism, be able to solve problems, take calculated risks and make decisions. Finally, students will be introduced to the need for highly developed communication skills, orally, in writing and technologically. They must be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
