Workshop Title: An Introduction to First Aid and CPR
Presenter: The Canadian Red Cross Society
Date: Feb. 20, 2008
Host School: A.A. Wright
Description of Program:
The students will learn the warning signs for a variety of medical emergency situations, how to make a plan to handle a medical crisis, remain calm and get appropriate assistance.  How to protect yourself in order to prevent emergency medical situations from occurring will also be addressed. Students will leave with a certificate of completion and a small first aid kit.

Workshop Title: Creative Visual Art

Description of Program:
Students will tour the Gallery and participate in hands-on art activities.  The Gallery currently hosts two exciting exhibits that contain drawings, paintings and graphics by the late Toronto artist Aba Bayefsky and the outstanding photography of Sarnia's own Glen Ogilvy.

Student groups will construct an emergency rescue litter to transport a member of the group.  Teams encounter a series of challenges and puzzles beginning with geo-caching.

Workshop Title:  A Historical Survey of Music Based on Musical Styles

Description of Program:
This workshop discusses the three basic elements of music; melody, harmony and rhythm.  The styles covered in this historical survey are Blues, Pop, Gospel, Jazz, Folk, Theatrical, Classical and World music.  A progression is described showing how Rock and Roll developed out of earlier forms and how a variety of forms came to be after the dominance of Rock in the 1960's.  These later forms under discussion include Rap/Hip Hop, Heavy Metal, Christian Rock and Disco.

Workshop Title: Native American Art

Description of Program:
Much aboriginal art consists of designs reproduced during ceremonies to get in touch with spiritual power.  In this workshop students will be introduced to the legends of the dream catcher and will learn about some of the techniques and materials used by aboriginals to create their art.  They will create their own designs working with a variety of materials to produce a uniquely personal dream catcher.
Prerequisite Skills: Interest in and love for art and native culture.

Workshop Title: The Snake in the Box and Caged Centaurs

Description of Program:
This is a problem solving workshop which covers such topics as cryptography, two and three dimensional geometry, variables and equations, number theory, logical analysis, numerical relationships and geometric relationships.
Prerequisite Skills: a keen interest in problem solving and math puzzles.
 

Workshop Title: Doo Wah Diddy Diddy, Iko Iko and Atlantis

Description of Program:
This workshop surveys the main purposes (18 in all) of music of all kinds and relates the three elements of music (melody, harmony and rhythm) to the music's purpose.  A variety of examples are presented in various auditory and visual forms as the students attempt to determine the purpose of particular samples.

Workshop Title: Media Day

Description of Program:
A bus trip to visit two media facilities is being planned.  Students interested in learning how a radio station and small television station operate are invited to attend.  At Cogeco Cable TV students will have an opportunity to try out camera, microphones and digital editing equipment.  Students are asked to prepare at their schools, a 30 to 60 second commercial.  At the radio station, students will visit the newsroom, CD collection area, and a variety of studios.  Students are asked to prepare questions they would like to have answered.

Description of Program:
Students will have an opportunity to inspect and use a microscope to explore the "invisible world".  One of the key activities is to study live pond life microorganisms and develop a sense of their anatomy and relative sizes.  The later quantitative measurement is particularly challenging.  It is sure to be a fun and educational experience!

Workshop Title: Sing & Jive at Wyoming

Description of Program:
Students will learn to sing a number of songs as well as the choreography for the songs.  Once learned, they will perform in front of the students at Wyoming School.

Workshop Title: Outdoor/Naturalist Education

Description of Program:
The program for the day will take place in two parts:
1.  In the morning the students will participate in an orienteering exercise that will involve map reading, understanding natural features and compass use.
2.  In the afternoon, the students will engage in a simulation game, "Instincts for Survival".  Students will learn about natural selection, survival of the fittest and daily survival challenges in the wild.

 This workshop begins with a description of the three basic elements of music, then concentrates of rhythm as a basis for a historical survey of music. Armed with a list of suspects and clues from the scene of the crime, students become forensic scientists trying to solve a mystery. Techniques used include chromatography, fingerprinting and chemical analysis.

Title: Entrepreneurial Science
Presenter: Let's Talk Science

Description of Program:
Students learn about the economics of science by forming companies to design self-propelled objects.  By "purchasing" parts, building and testing their creations, students discover a variety of potential energy sources.  Having a novel idea is just the first step in inventing.  Turning the idea into a viable product is definitely not easy and may not be inexpensive.

Title: Art Appreciation

Description of Program: Come learn how to solve the puzzle of The Tower of Brahma using problem solving strategies!  Learn about Platonic Solids, logarithmic spirals, cyclic numbers and more in "The Tower of Brahma and Hotel Infinity" workshop.  
    
  In the afternoon, "Suitcase Words and Oxymorons" will introduce students to the versatility and flexibility of the English language.   Foreign languages and invented languages (ex. High Elven from the Tolkien books) will be explored to discover how foreign languages may not be all that foreign.  Students will also discover eponyms, toponyms, contronyms, oronyms, acronyms, kangaroo words and more!

Title: Hydration Nation

Description of Program: Students will join the best hydrological research team in Canada to survey a newly discovered island.  They will determine water quality of the island through testing the chemistry and physical properties of the mail bodies of water.  Once testing is complete, they will make recommendations on how the island should be used.

DESCRIPTION: Students will be provided with opportunities to: explore and use lab equipment, learn how foreign genes are prepared for introduction to plants, observe plant tissue culture plates to develop an understanding of the various stages of plant transformation, discuss genetic engineering of plants (pros & cons).
