Weather

1. Compare/contrast one or more of the following “weather pairs” – hurricane & tornado, Chinook & Sirocco winds, hail & sleet, dew & frost.

2.  There are many old verses and sayings concerning the weather.  Research weather lore and make an illustrated booklet of your favourites.  Find out how many of these are really reliable weather indicators and explain why.

3.  Imagine that you are a weather vane on top of a house or barn.  You sit up there through all kinds of weather.  Describe what your life is like and why.  Be sure to give lots of details about the weather you experience.

4.  There are many characters associated with the weather.  Choose one from the list and create an original picture of him/her (don’t copy one from a book) or make your weather character into a puppet.  Thor, Norse god of thunder; Hurakan, Cuban god of storms; Typhon, Greek monster creating wind; Janus, Roman god of beginnings and ends; Sol, Roman god of the sun; Fu Jin, Japanese god of wind.

Student Idea

5.  Compose an interview with an ancient weather god.  Research to ensure your information is accurate.  You might use one of the gods mentioned in activity 4.

6.  Make up an original weather trivia game or an illustrated “Believe it or Not” booklet of wacky weather facts.

7.  Acid rain is a big problem in Canada.  Find out how it is created, what it does to the environment and what is being done about the problem.  Are we doing enough to remedy the problem?  Support your opinion with facts.

8.  List words that “sunshine” makes you think of.  What about “snow”, “fog” or “blizzard”?
