Rocks & Minerals

1.  What are some famous rock formations that are tourist attractions?  Describe ones you have visited or would like to visit.  Research the story behind each.

2.  Find a pet rock, give it a name and make it a home.  Describe how it would feel to be a pet rock.

3.  Research all of the theories on how the pyramids were built.  Which one do you agree with? Why?

4.  Develop an unusual instrument using rocks.  Try to play songs on it.

Student Idea

5.  Geologists must be able to read and use topographic maps and charts.  Research this type of map.  Work to develop a topographic map of your yard or the school yard.

6.  Photograph rocks and minerals using a close up lens to reveal striking details of form and colour.  Mount your photos to create a unique, attractive display.

7. Research famous places where dinosaur fossils have been discovered.  Create an advertisement to encourage tourists to come and visit the location but to take care to preserve the artifacts.

8.  How did man transport rocks before modern times?  Design your own method for moving a large rock.
